Walked into a home with a 1948 Gulbransen spinet. Had not been tuned in over twenty years or longer. Full of dirt, dust, grime and a treasure trove of stuff. First step, take it apart, remove the keys and clean it up.
Normally I spend about 30 minutes cleaning a piano before I start tuning. This was a two-hour in-depth cleaning.
Piano had Q tips inside the piano...not sure how that happens. Violin bows behind the piano.
Cleaned up pretty good! Time to tune.
Piano was way, way, way flat. Flattest piano I've ever tuned. One and a half to two notes flat across the entire keyboard.
A piano that far off cannot be tuned, so I did a pitch raise bringing it up close to in tune. With a piano that flat, there is a much higher chance that a string will break. God was smiling on me, no strings broke! Piano sounds decent. I will come back in a few weeks and do a standard tuning to dial it in.
Four hours later, another satisfied customer!
