Tuned a beautiful 2002 Kohler & Campbell upright last week.

F1 sharp would not play. Press the key and the hammer didn't move. Hmmmm. Wonder what that could be. The customer did not even know it was broke. Most pianists don't play that low on the keyboard. The 10th key, way to the left. I got out my Dewalt light, put on my cheaters and started looking at the action to see what the problem was.
The jack had come loose from the wippen. I tried in vain to get it seated without taking the action out, but alas I had to pull the action.

The action on a piano has a lot of moving pieces and sometimes they come loose or break. In this case it appeared that they did not use enough glue when the piano was assembled at the factory. Two little drops of glue were barely holding on and it worked its way loose.

Pulled the action...

Removed the wippen jack assembly...

Glued it back together...

Reinstalled the action, tuned the piano and another satisfied customer!
