Hey Jim...What did you tune today?

Two extremes...a 1914 Kroeger Upright and a 1997 Kawai RX-1 Grand Piano. Both very interesting pianos.

The Kroeger is 109 years old. Kroeger was established in 1879 in New York City. A beautiful piano, but way out of tune. Needed a pitch raise and a tune...G5# was broken, figured out how to fix that. When I was done it sounded really good...not great, but good considering how old it is. Needs all the jack straps replaced, needs a lot of regulation. Keys are different heights, letoff is all over the place. Action is pretty sloppy, repetition is iffy on a lot of keys. But, for a family heirloom, looks great and plays well. Pretty amazing that a 100 year old piano can still play a tune and sound good.

1997 Kawai RX-1 made in Hamamatsu, Japan is a beautiful instrument and a joy to tune. Kawai started making pianos in 1927 and continue to make beautiful pianos that look as good as they play. This was a grand piano, which are open and easier to tune. Loved working on this piano and was able to dial it dead on. Sounds great and will hold the tune for a year or two. Looks great and plays great!
