A sticky Whippen Jack...and you say what is that? A concert grand piano has over 10,000 parts. It is a complicated machine. The jack is part of the wippen, which moves the hammer to hit the string when you press a key.
There is a very small pin that holds the jack to the support and allows it to move. The pin has a felt bushing around it and sometimes it is too tight or gets dirty or something is spilled on the piano that makes it stick.
My customer has a beautiful 1968 Steinway grand piano and C7# played intermittently. Could not repeat. To figure out was going on I had to pull the action.
It took me awhile to figure out what the issue was, but I found the culprit...sticky wippen jack! Put some lubricant on it, freed up the jack, put it all back together and problem solved!
