Hey Jim...several keys on my spinet won't play...why is that?

clesiemo

1950s and 1960s spinets used plastic elbows on the lifter rods. Plastic was "brand new" back then and was not as strong or long lasting as today's plastics. They get brittle over time and tend to crack and fall apart after 60ish years.

So how do I fix that Jim? I'm glad you asked. I ordered 88 new plastic elbows, removed all the old ones using pliers. Broke off all the old plastic.

Put the new ones on, reinstalled all the lifter rods, adjusted the key height and then went to tune it.

Piano had not been tuned in a very long time and needed a pitch raise. I'll go back in a few weeks and do a full tuning. Took 5 hours, but I enjoyed talking with customer while I was doing the work. I meet all kinds of interesting people tuning pianos. Everbody has a story to tell.

I love when a repair goes according to plan and I can get a piano singing again! Another satisfied customer. Family heirloom playing and sounding great again.
