Hey Jim...one of my keys is sticking...why is that?
"Sticky" keys can be caused by many different issues. It can be the pins that hold the keys in position. It can be the bushings too tight in the action. It can be poorly designed keys that are not weighted correctly. It can be hammers rubbing against each other. Sometimes the bushings just need lubed. And can be a host of other things. But sometimes it just needs cleaned.
I was working on a customer's piano that had a couple sticky keys. I pulled the front rail, took out all the keys. I found a bunch of paper clips stuck under the keys. That was most likely the problem. Vacuumed it all out, cleaned out the key bed, cleaned the keys with some windex, put it all back together and voila! Was much better.
Took about a half hour extra and another satisfied customer!
Similar issue on a 1965 Chickering piano I tuned last week.
