Hey Jim...Have you tuned any really old pianos?

Yes I have! Old pianos are a lot like old people...they just start wearing out. But, I've worked on some 100 year old pianos that have been well maintained and still sound great. And, I've seen some pianos that are way past their expiration date.

I have tuned eleven pianos over a 100 years old. The oldest was a 1900 Steinway in excellent shape.
A friend from the symphony has a restored 1909 Sterling that is a beautiful piano.
I recently tuned a 1907 Bollman Brothers piano made by Jesse French...the woodwork detail was very unique. They don't make pianos like that any more!
I just tuned a 1913 Weber baby grand this week in Webster Groves.
And a very nice 1917 Baldwin in the Lake St. Louis area.
I've tuned a 1914 Howard twice that is still being used to teach piano after many, many years.
Did some repairs and tuned a 1914 Kroeger in Columbia, Mo.
Unfortunately, on occasion, I've had to tell a client that their really old piano cannot be tuned and needs a major overhaul if they want to continue playing it. The pin block can be cracked, soundboard cracked, the harp might be broken. Basically the pins can be so loose that it no longer holds the string tension. Does not happen often, but that is a sad day. Pianos are like people, they don't live forever. At some point they are just a piece of furniture...beautiful to behold, but no longer a musical instrument.
